Portelle was created by two Melbourne sisters with deep southern-Italian roots, a heritage that has shaped our hearts, our eye for beauty, and the way we move through the world. A recent trip back to Italy stirred something in us: the nostalgia of our childhood, the warmth of our nonni, the vibrant blue seas, the scent of ripe lemons, and the unmistakable glow of an afternoon spritz. These moments, simple yet rich in feeling, became the inspiration behind our colours, our names, and ultimately, our brand.
Along the Adriatic coast, we watched how locals and travellers spent entire days by the water. Towels lined up only centimetres apart, people flowing in and out, a shared rhythm of sun, salt and conversation. It was beautiful… but it also highlighted something we’d always felt back home: a lack of convenience. No space. No sense of security. And always the same dilemma, leaving your belongings unattended never felt safe, and carrying everything with you was frustrating.
That’s where our lightbulb moment happened.
We knew there had to be a better way to enjoy the simple moments without the stress.
